NATIONAL PARK SHELTER
"Park and Ride Shelter," National Park Station
Commissioned by the Ruapehu District Council, this shelter serves visitors traveling through the Tongariro National Park World Heritage Area, renowned for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and Whakapapa ski field.
The bespoke design of the shelter incorporates Designbrand's innovative aluminium system for the curtain wall and roof construction. The main structural steel frame is anchored on concrete block masonry and clad in volcanic stone to harmonize with the park's natural surroundings.
The project followed a comprehensive "Concept to Completion" approach including Building Consent drawings and structural engineering in compliance with building codes.
The structural steelwork was fabricated in Wanganui, then transported and assembled on-site. Prefabricated shelter components were designed to integrate seamlessly with the steel frame. Installation was remotely coordinated from Wellington, with the construction team traveling to National Park for three multi-day sessions to complete the work.
The project was delivered on budget and features volcanic stonework, seating for 28, and integrated LED lighting. We are proud to have created a functional and visually striking addition to this iconic location.
